Teaching Philosophy
After working in NYC as a freelance drummer for 24 years, I recently moved to Greensboro, NC and built a teaching and recording studio.
Brad Wentworth Music is an educational space for drummers. I strive to provide a comfortable, inspiring and safe environment to learn and develop artistry on the drum set.
As a teacher, I believe that each student processes information at their own pace and has a unique learning style. I aim to shape our sessions to each student's particular learning style and interests. My approach is focused on human movement (how to move to express a musical idea) and developing artistic creativity by helping you identify the musical choices you are making, then how to broaden and refine your musical vocabulary to bring to life your unique musical point of view.
Movement
As a performing artist, I have played a variety of genres of music - rock, pop, jazz, Afro-Cuban, folk rock, hip hop, new classical and electronic music. My goal as a teacher is to give students a broad musical understanding and an approach to the drums that will allow them to pursue any type of music they are interested in. My approach is informed by my work with dancers and choreographers who specialize in human movement and by studying and performing with world class musicians. In music, the way a musician moves directly affects the sound and feel of the music they are making. Developing a range of movement possibilities which includes fluidity, coordination, velocity and movement size (i.e., dynamics) is key to playing all types of music and developing a wide range of musical expression. I believe that “technique” in music is the way we move. It is not a fixed system but a fluid and adaptable way of moving dependent on the expressive demands of a musical situation.
Artistry
Musical artistry is how we express ourselves on our instrument in relation to other musicians or sounds. I believe that each person has a unique point of view and the potential to have a unique voice on their instrument. Developing your own voice on an instrument begins with the musical choices you make in a musical situation. Having a deep awareness of your musical environment by listening allows you to make impactful creative choices. Developing the ability to be present and listen while making musical choices on your instrument is a lifelong process, a practice that is woven into my teaching philosophy.
In Practice
On a practical level, as a teacher I view my role as a guide through a vast range of musical topics. I aim to give students tools and concepts that will help them develop their ability on the drum set and deepen their understanding of music. Here are a few examples of the types of topics covered in a lesson:
-
Creative approaches to coordination
-
How to build effective practice habits
-
Drum rudiments and why they are important for musical expression on the drum set
-
Methods to break down and understand drum parts
-
The ability to learn a song quickly and be able to record an exciting drum part
-
Transcribing music
-
Using transcribed material to develop your own musical creativity.
-
Sound production and how tone affects musicality
-
How to self analyze and push your boundaries as a musician
If this sounds like an environment that would support your development, I’d enjoy meeting you and working with you!
I offer in-person and remote lessons.
